I this question a lot.

Before we start, here is a basic explanation between the two: loose leaf tea is tea that is not brewed in a tea bag. Tea bag tea... is tea in a bag 😂 very simple but there’s more ☝🏽
When the tea is not in a bag it has room to expand and absorb water as it infuses. When tea is steeped in a bag, it is limited to the size of the bag which can restrict that amount of flavor, minerals, nutrients, and aromas.

3 Main Differences:

1. Standardization vs. Variety: teabag tea is produced in a way to create consumer reliance and standardization. Every box of tea from yogi will taste exactly like the last box you bought from yogi. Loose leaf is not grown for standardization. Flavors, colors, nutrient levels, etc will vary and it’s to be expected. A good analogy is fresh squeezed orange juice vs. Tropicana.

2. Quality: Tea bags often (but not always) are lower quality - the tea in the bags can be dust-like with less potential for complex flavors and dense nutrients. Loose leaf is known for its complex flavors and extreme nutrient density.

3. Convenience: tea bags are way more convenient. Taking loose leaf tea on the go requires planing and tea tools like strainers or a travel mug that is made for loose leaf (has a strainer). Tea bags on the other hand can be thrown into a pocket/purse and taken anywhere.

There is a lot more to the story.
There are happy mediums between loose leaf and tea bags that offer the convenience of bags but the quality of tea (pyramid bags). There are also exceptions to this rule, there are loose leaf tea companies that provide a very low quality of loose leaf and there are tea companies that provide a very high quality tea bag. And then there is WHOLE LEAF TEA, an entirely different and wonderful tea experience.
