🌶 There is a lot of power in truly loving every aspect of yourself and being unafraid of letting people know. Power in rejecting the concept of feigning humility or dimming your light to not appear “full of yourself” — a phrase which begs the question, if not me, then who exactly should I be full of???
Society has done a number on women — especially Black women and women of color — in terms of the constant socialization that requires us to be beautiful, smart, excellent, driven, sexy, motherly, kind, brave, strong, feminine... but also asks us to keep quiet about it.
And to that I say, most (im)politely, with my legs crossed, lips painted, and eyelashes batting, “fuck no.”
.
.
.
I have more to say on this but I have to get back to my day. It’s a full time job being this phenomenal.
I’ll see y’all at my next selfie.
Happy Friday beautiful people, don’t be afraid to let the world see how truly magnificent you are.

🌶 If you suffer from brittle nails and broken hair you might benefit from consuming more silica.
Cucumbers are extremely high in silica. Grab one.
🧞♀️
Silica is a mineral that contributes to the growth and connectivity of tissue in your body. Silica contributes to hormonal balance and the balance of magnesium and calcium.
Silica is also a crucial mineral for #beauty : it keeps your #skin looking young, it makes your #hair shiny and strong, and it gives you naturally long perfect #nails

🌶 Is there anything more stressful than running low on your favorite night cream?? For me, no. Especially right now. I’m in Denver, Colorado for a few days, a notoriously dry city and feeling the repercussions of leaving my moist DC swamp. My skin is drier, more oily and very irritated 😫. I’m using twice the amount of moisturizer that I usually use! Thankfully I have a brand new jar on the way 🥰

🌶 Food Law: Defining Natural
.
The Gist:
Natural” has no legal definition applicable to 80%+ of American food. Most often it is a marketing tool used by food producers to make money not a food label regulated by the government.
.
The Juice:
Food labeling laws in the U.S. are regulated by two federal agencies: FDA and the USDA.
The USDA is in charge of meat, poultry, and eggs. The FDA is in charge of almost everything else ( ~80% of our food supply).
.
The FDA has not formally defined natural. It has not created parameters or metrics for a food to meet to be able to bear the label.
The USDA HAS formally defined “natural” and it applies to 3 major products: meat, poultry, eggs. .
This means for everything that is not meat, poultry, or eggs. “Natural” has no formal meaning and is able to be used as one of the greatest food marketing terms in our consumer history.
.
Why is it such a great marketing term? Because according to the Consumer’s Union association, 90% of American consumers believe that “natural” indicates, at the very least, that the natural product is somewhat healthier than the product without the natural label. Food producers make minimal (if any) changes, slap on the word natural, make the packaging brown, and hike the price up 30%. A superior scam.
.
Does this mean that all food that has a natural label is attempting to deceive? No.
Lots of companies have defined what natural means to them and stick by their own definition or adopt standards from other associations and countries that have more strict policies on the word “natural”. And some companies are taking advantage of a consumer trend and a legal loophole. .
In sum:
Law permeates every aspect of your world. Especially in the United States.
Wellness goes beyond green smoothies and instagramable diets; it also has to be about about understanding labels, food law, and the entities regulating EVERYTHING that you consume.
.
HG 2020 will feature a LOT more law and legal analysis of health and beauty issues. Might as well put this degree to use 😉💛 @healthgeenie #QuarantineShot #WithJay ...read more
🌶 Happy Ti-Tea Tuesday/Healthy Humpday!
Let’s talk about the relaxing, zen-icon, queen of calm in the chaos flower that we already know: Lavender!
Ms. Lavender, with her long slender shape and her bright purple accents. She is everywhere: in candles, in body wash, in shampoo, in tea, in spas, in kombucha, even in coffee (Balinese lavender coffee changed my life)
An extremely popular purple lady, but why?
What is about this purple goddess that really gets the people going? Why is our girl so damn versatile??
The short answer is because she is effective. The long answer has to do with marketing, capitalism, and the frenzied state of the world (ask me about the global rates of anxiety and the rates in wealthy nations!) — but this is not a page about that — y’all are here for the health benefits! So lets get on with those.
Health benefits:
In short, lavender relaxes you. It’s an effective naturally remedy for anxiety, nervousness, insomnia.
Plants like lavender have a sweet smelling alcohol called linalool that a Japanese study found to have a calming, anti-anxiety effect on the brain in a way calming drugs dont in that it does not impair movement. Also, unlike anti-anxiety drugs, lavender is absorbed via lungs by way of smell into the blood stream and then travels to the brain, making it quite the concerto of calming bodily cooperation.
Traditional folk medicine has long heralded lavender as an herb for relaxation, calm, and sleep.
Beauty benefits:
Lavender oil is antibacterial making it a solid choice for an acne fighting ingredient. If you read above you could probably guess that if lavender can calm your mind it can definitely calm your skin — so yet another great ingredient to treat inflammation.
.
As a tea, I love lavender to unwind at the end of the day with honey and lemon. I enjoy it much more than chamomile to unwind and because it’s a tisane not a tea (remember the difference?) I don’t have to worry about caffeine.
.
Consider burning lavender incense or candles while drinks lavender tea and turning your space into a spa-like oasis.
Until next time, sip slow and stay healthy 💛🫖

🌶 JUICE RECIPE:
I’m back with another super easy juice recipe to get your week started off right. Juice equal parts celery and equal parts cucumber, then top with a squeeze of lime.
This juice is glorious to drink when you wake up after a night of drinking orrr when you just ate a little too much of the wrong stuff.
Health Benefits: this juice is great for your heart and increasing the circulation of oxygen through your body. It is hydrating and it gently supports your digestive system and stomach health.
Beauty Benefits: The hydration will help get rid of that sallow skin look that we all hate and the silica in the cucumbers support a pump glowy look. Both food are anti-inflammatories so this is great for the inflammation skin issues.
If you dont have a juicer but you do have a high powered blender, you can rough chop the vegetables and toss them in with a little water or coconut water and blend on high until the fiber is… well less fibrous.
Happy Monday. Drink your greens 💛
